Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition Will Host Great American Smokeout Community Event
November 18, 2013 (Chester, PA) – On Nov. 21, the Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition will host a Great American Smokeout community recognition event inside the Boys & Girls Club, 201 E. 7th Street, Chester, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The public is welcome to attend this event which will include a state proclamation presented by State Representative Joseph T. Hackett; a county resolution presented by Councilman John P. McBlain; a city resolution presented by Chester City Mayor John Linder; recognition of Delaware County Youth Essay Contest winners; and recognition of local municipality youth tobacco-free zones.
Since 1976 on the 3rd Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society leads the Great American Smokeout. This year the Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition organized a Great American Smokeout writing contest for students between 3rd and 8th grades, with two groups: 3rd to 5th grades, and 6th to 8th grades. Students were asked to write a letter to either someone in their life who needs encouragement to quit using tobacco, or to someone in their life who does not smoke and is a great example of how to live a tobacco free life. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each age group will have a chance to read their letters during the event and also receive their prizes along with the honorable mention students.
The event will also include a presentation regarding tobacco trends and will feature informational tables with the many resources available to residents in Delaware County. Examples of the information available will include:
- CKHS Community Health Education team featuring their Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program and Kids Asthma Management Program.
- Crozer’s Recovery Department.
- Chester Drug Free Communities, a program affiliated with Crozer-Chester Medical Center and its Crozer Wellness Center.
