The Perks of Exercising at Any Age 

It’s no surprise or shock to hear that exercise is good for you mentally as well as physically. Being active at a young age and continuing over the years will benefit you at every stage of life. As a general goal, 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every day is a great way to stay fit, happy and healthy. If you desire to lose weight or meet a specific fitness goal, more exercise may be just what you need. 

Regardless of a woman’s age or if she happens to be pregnant, the benefits of exercising have similar outcomes. One of the most popular and common reasons why women exercise is weight control. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. Exercise can help prevent weight gain and maintain weight loss. This does not mean you need to set aside several hours a day for physical activity. You can make small changes with as little as 10 minutes of continuous moderate-intensity activity such as using the stairs instead of the elevator or doing daily household chores.  

Exercise helps fight and prevent health conditions and diseases. Regular moderate-intensity physical activity can help manage health problems or concerns including stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, depression, arthritis, falls and some types of cancer. Being active boosts high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, also known as good cholesterol, and lowers unhealthy triglycerides. 

Not only does exercise play a huge part in shedding unwanted pounds and potentially adding a few extra years to our lives, it helps boost energy and improves our mood. Physical activity stimulates brain chemicals that can leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Your mood can be altered when you feel good about yourself and your appearance, which boosts confidence and self-esteem levels. Regular exercise helps the cardiovascular system deliver blood and oxygen more efficiently. When the heart and lungs are efficient, you will have more energy to go about daily chores or everyday necessities. 

For those who have trouble falling asleep at night, exercise or physical activity may be the answer to your prayers. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. However, try not to exercise too close to your normal bedtime. This could give you more energy and actually make it more difficult to fall asleep. 

Considering the rising rates of obesity in children, getting them off the couch and encouraging more physical activity can help prevent and fight diseases in the future. Children who exercise are less likely to develop diseases and other chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart problems, respiratory issues, thyroid imbalances, and abnormal cholesterol levels. In some cases, conditions including depression, anxiety and attention issues can be improved through exercise. 

When a woman becomes pregnant, her body goes through many changes. Some question whether exercise is safe. The good news is, physical activity is encouraged and safe for healthy pregnant women. According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), becoming active and exercising at least 30 minutes at moderate-intensity on most, if not all, days of the week can benefit your health during pregnancy. 

Check with your doctor or midwife before starting a new exercise program or if you have any health concerns.
