Comprehensive Classes
The Center for Diabetes offers comprehensive classes to help patients understand diabetes. The health care team works with you to teach you more about what causes diabetes, what factors put you at risk, and how to make important lifestyle changes to keep the disease under control. A series of morning, afternoon and evening classes are scheduled to meet your needs. View our classes and support groups.

Free Classes and Support Groups
The Center for Diabetes also offers free classes and support groups that give you the opportunity to share and learn from other people with diabetes. Topics covered during these meetings include coping skills, resources, foot and eye care, blood sugar control and healthy meal planning. View our classes and support groups.

Healthy Eating with Diabetes Class
The Center for Diabetes at Springfield Hospital is pleased to offer nutrition classes for people with diabetes. Led by a registered dietician who is a certified diabetes educator, the two-hour class offers instruction on meal planning, monitoring carbohydrates and serving sizes, label-reading and more. Pre-Diabetes Seminars
Are you one of the estimated 41 million Americans with pre-diabetes? If so, the Center for Diabetes at Springfield Hospital offers a fee-based Pre-Diabetes Seminar each month. Seminars explore how doctors define pre-diabetes, the importance of activity and exercise and healthy meal planning. Seminars cost $25 and attendance is limited to 10 people per class. Diabetes Refresher Courses
The focus of the Center for Diabetes at Springfield Hospital is to help patients achieve and continue blood glucose control by balancing meals, exercise and medication, when necessary.
It is important to stay current with your diet, technology and current trends. A refresher course can help you stay current or energize your current program.
The Center for Diabetes accepts most major insurance plans. Many class registration fees are also covered by insurance.

Basic Refresher/Nurse and Nutrition
Our refresher class is a follow up class for the graduates of our diabetes program. Programs are lead by a registered nurse and registered dietician. Both are certified in diabetes education.
Our Basic Refresher class will “refresh” or energize your diabetes self management program.
We will update you on the newest in diabetes management as well as blood glucose patterns, exercise and medications.
The dietician will:
- Update Meal Plan
- Are you putting your carbohydrate skills into practice?
- How do the foods you choose affect your blood sugar and your weight?
Attendees are encouraged to bring food and blood sugar logs, as well as your favorite food labels for an interactive discussion.

The basic refresher course is offered for two hours the first Tuesday of the month from 1 to 3 p.m.
Intensive Management Refresher (IMT)/Nurse and Nutrition
This refresher course is a follow up to the Intensive Management program if you are on multi-dose injections of insulin or on pump therapy. Programs are lead by a registered nurse and registered dietician. Both are certified in diabetes education.
We will discuss blood glucose patterns and how to refresh better blood glucose management.
The dietician will:
- Update Meal Plan
- How to fine tune your blood sugars factoring in carbohydrates.
Although a person with diabetes does not need rapid acting insulin with proteins and fats; it is important to discuss keeping calories within target and choosing healthy lean proteins and monounsaturated fats to protect our heart.
Attendees are encouraged to bring food and blood sugar logs, as well as your favorite food labels for an interactive discussion.

The intensive management course is offered from 1 to 3 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.
Pump Therapy Refresher
The Pump Refresher course will review the basic insulin pump features and those advanced features to improve blood glucose control. We will review sensors and downloading your insulin pump to improve control. This course is led by a registered nurse who is certified in diabetes education.
Insulin to carbohydrate and sensitivity ratios will be reviewed and updated, as needed.

This course is offered from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the third Thursday on the month.
