Imaging & Diagnostics for Cancer Care
Advanced techniques for early detection
Crozer-Keystone Health System is committed to making the most advanced technologies available to patients. For cancer patients, this means our diagnostic and pathologic equipment and techniques can diagnose cancer at its earliest stages.
We are, for example, the first provider in Delaware County to obtain access to the PET/CT scanner, which combines positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) to accurately detect cancer and pinpoint its exact location in the body.
Other high-tech diagnostic tools we use include:
Endoscopic ultrasound is an important diagnostic tool for patients with tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and bile ducts.
Endoscopic ultrasound uses sound waves to examine the wall of the esophagus, stomach and intestine, as well as structures near the gastrointestinal tract. Ultrasound waves create pictures of wall layers along with adjacent organs, blood vessels and lymph nodes. Abnormalities can be sampled safely and easily.
Sentinel lymph node mapping
New studies are under way at Crozer-Keystone Health System and across the country that may limit breast surgery to removal of only the first lymph node—the sentinel lymph node. The sentinel lymph node may indicate the likelihood of breast cancer spreading to other parts of the body.
Sentinel lymph node biopsy has been proven successful in the treatment of melanoma skin cancer. Preliminary results from national clinical trials with breast patients have produced exciting results, and the FDA may approve this procedure for breast cancer treatment.
Crozer-Keystone Health System offers minimally invasive biopsy procedures that involve a small incision in the skin, avoiding the need for an open surgical procedure and thus reducing recovery time. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis; they do not require surgery.
