Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a form of diagnostic radiology that enables the radiologist, with the aid of a contrast agent, to visualize the organ or area of concern via X-ray. Barium enema, Upper GI series, Small Bowel series and Intravenous Pyelography (IVP) are several examples of fluoroscopic exams. The patient stands in front of a fluoroscope (an X-ray machine that takes pictures) and drinks contrast or has dye injected into a vein in the arm or hand. The radiologist will take pictures of the organ to be studied as this contrast passes through the system. The patient may be asked to move into different positions for different pictures. When all pictures have been taken the patient is allowed to leave.
