Psychiatric Rehabilitation - Crozer-Keystone Health System - PA

Psychiatric Rehabilitation

Social Steps Psychiatric Rehabilitation helps adults 18 years and older who have functional disabilities from mental illness to develop, enhance and/or retain psychiatric stability, social competencies, personal adjustment and/or independent living competencies.

The program is founded on the principles of consumer choice and active involvement with persons in recovery. The program is guided by the basic philosophy of rehabilitation - that people with disabilities need opportunities to identify and choose their desired roles in the community regarding living, learning, working and socializing.

Mission Statement

The mission of Social Steps Psychiatric Rehabilitation is to help people with psychiatric disabilities to increase their functioning so that they are successful and satisfied in their environment with the least amount of ongoing professional intervention.

About the Program

The Social Steps Psychiatric Rehabilitation program teaches social skills so that individuals can experience more success and satisfaction in the environment of their choice. Participants often advance to the point of readiness for a more demanding structured growth-oriented program and will be encouraged to do so.

Self-Planning Enhances Development

Program participants develop a planned program of goal-setting, functional assessment, identification of needed and preferred skills and teaching and managing skills. A combination of these rehabilitation elements provides the support and resources people need so that they can successfully live and work in their cultural environment.

Social Skills Training

Social Steps incorporates many learning opportunities in the monthly schedule, including:

  • Healthy living
  • Exercise
  • Spirituality
  • Psycho-education groups
  • Social skills training, and more

The program is designed to help participants reach the next level of recovery. Our skills teaching groups not only define the unique needs of the individuals, but also help them regain a sense of hope. Participants take an active role in their recovery and will graduate to a community of choice when they are ready.

Counselors establish positive and supportive relationships with each person in their groups that are reciprocal and sensitive to the person's cultural needs.

The recovery process is a journey that participants take from one pathway of recovery to another. The Social Steps program uses many resources to encourage people to find new and innovative ways to achieve greater independence.

Self-enhancement groups are offers that include literacy, computer lab, handwriting and money management skills. Through task projects, participants are able to earn small amounts of change to purchase items of their choice.

Every year, Social Steps sponsors a graduation for participants. During the graduation ceremony, graduates are recognized for their progress as they share their achievements with their family, friends and support systems. Graduates move forward into the community to search for a new and fulfilling life. Each graduate's journey is different, but Social Steps provides the them with the necessary tools and skills to avoid pitfalls and find positive ways to continue to achieve their goals.

The psychiatric rehabilitation assessor for Delaware County completes an assessment packet that determines specific supports or resources the individual needs and the skills and goals the individual prefers to develop, achieve and maintain.
