Dr. Birns received a BS in Anthropology & Human Behavioral Biology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, New York and a sports medicine fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic at Cedar-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Before joining Premier, Dr. Birns served as an assistant team physician to the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and USC Football teams.
Dr. Birns specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures of the hip, shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. He specializes in hip labral repair, labral reconstruction and other surgeries for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). His experience at Kerlan-Jobe with professional and collegiate level pitchers has given him the chance to become proficient at shoulder, knee and elbow arthroscopy, as well as Tommy John Reconstruction. In addition, he specializes in total knee, total shoulder and anterior total hip replacements.
