Crozer-Keystone has expanded its outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation presence with a new location in Western Delaware County. Crozer-Keystone Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Associates (485 Baltimore Pike, Suite 202 in Glen Mills), led by board-certified physiatrist Brian Murphy, D.O., offers a unique treatment model for ailments ranging from joint pain to carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica. Physiatrists provide individualized nonsurgical medical and rehabilitation programs that help patients regain function and mobility.

Before becoming a physician, Dr. Murphy worked for five years as a physical therapist. He attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. “I have a thorough understanding of nonsurgical musculoskeletal medicine – including conditions affecting the lower back and spine, shoulder and knee, as well as stroke and other neurological disorders,” he says. “My job is to get people better.”

Dr. Murphy’s holistic view of patient care permeates every aspect of his treatment plans. One area of special interest is electromyography (EMG), an outpatient test that assists in disease diagnosis by evaluating nerve and muscle health. During the test, a fine needle is inserted into a muscle to measure its response to stimulation. It’s often used when patients have pain, tingling and numbness.

While the EMG is commonly anticipated with a measure of dread and anxiety, Dr. Murphy says it doesn’t need to be that way. “People read about EMG online and talk to their friends, so they can be anxious when they come in for the test. I help them to relax before, during and after, and when it’s all done they tell me it wasn’t as bad as they thought it would be.” Sometimes, technicians assist physicians during an EMG, but Dr. Murphy takes pride in conducting the study himself ─ which allows him to provide the hands-on care that’s a hallmark of his essential patient philosophy.

Dr. Murphy’s practice also offers outpatient physical therapy services. Most people who need PT are recovering from a surgical procedure or have experienced a bone, joint or muscle injury. Many times, physical therapy alone can prevent the need for a surgical procedure.

Crozer-Keystone Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers a full-range of outpatient physical therapy services, joint injections, bracing, and prosthetic evaluation for amputees. Located in Glen Mills, the practice offers convenient physical therapy hours Monday through Friday.

Joining Crozer-Keystone not only allows Dr. Murphy to expand his outpatient base but provides the opportunity to share his healing touch with inpatients as well. He will oversee patient care provided at the Crozer-Keystone Regional Rehabilitation Centers at Delaware County Memorial Hospital and Taylor Hospital, which offer intensive treatment programs for patients recovering from neurological conditions, orthopedic and spinal cord injuries, trauma, stroke and more.

Dr. Murphy is excited to reach even more patients in Delaware County, a place he has called home his whole life. “My goal is to provide an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate environment,” he says.
