Independence Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care

Independence Blue Cross has designated Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Delaware County Memorial Hospital as Blue Distinction® Centers for Maternity Care.

In an effort to help prospective parents find hospitals that deliver quality, cost-efficient maternity care, Independence Blue Cross announced that Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland and Delaware County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) in Drexel Hill have been designated as two of the first hospitals to receive the Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care designation, a new designation under the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Crozer and DCMH are members of the Crozer-Keystone Health System.

Nearly four million babies are born in the U.S. annually, making childbirth the most common cause of hospitalization. This new Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on several quality measures, including the percentage of newborns that fall into the category of early elective delivery, an ongoing concern in the medical community. Compared with babies born 39 weeks or later, early term infants face higher risks of infant death and respiratory ailments such as respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, and respiratory failure, among other conditions. These babies also have a higher rate of admission to neonatal intensive care units.

In addition, hospitals that receive a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care designation agreed to meet requirements that align with principles that support evidence-based practices of care, as well as having initiated programs to promote successful breastfeeding, as described in the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative by Baby-Friendly USA or the Mother-Friendly Hospital program by the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) through its “Ten Steps of Mother-Friendly Care.” The program also evaluates hospitals on overall patient satisfaction, including a willingness to recommend the hospital to others.

Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care, an expansion of the national Blue Distinction Specialty Care program, are hospitals recognized for delivering quality specialty care safely and effectively, based on objective measures developed with input from the medical community.

“It’s an honor to be among the first group of hospitals designated a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care,” says Thomas J. Bader, M.D., chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for Crozer-Keystone Health System. “We feel that our programs offer the specialized care that our patients need to give their babies the best-possible start in life. Our Family-Centered Maternity Care Program, for example, promotes breastfeeding and instructs mothers on how to successfully breastfeed their children.

“Our patients are savvy, and we know that they have a choice in where to deliver their babies,” Bader continues. “Having this designation from Independence Blue Cross provides an added layer of confidence for our patients. It helps to ensure that they have made the right decision not just for themselves but for their babies.”

Albert El-Roeiy, M.D., associate chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at DCMH, adds that the labor and delivery teams are integral to the achievement of this designation. “This honor truly distinguishes Crozer-Keystone’s maternity program,” he says. “Our physicians and nurses are committed to providing the very best care to our patients. They work seamlessly to ensure the safety of both mother and baby, and most deliveries are relatively uneventful. But in the cases where something unexpected happens, our teams follow a precise protocol to make sure the patient and her baby receive proper emergency care. Both Crozer and DCMH have Neonatal Intensive Care Units that are staffed 24/7 in the event of such emergencies.”

Results from patient surveys consistently place Crozer-Keystone’s labor and delivery teams among the highest in satisfaction ratings system-wide.

“We’re pleased to recognize Crozer and DCMH for their proven expertise in providing high-quality, safe, and effective care to new and expectant mothers and their children,” says Richard L. Snyder, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer at Independence Blue Cross. “Together, we’re working toward improving the health and wellness of our members and the community.”

Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies across the nation have recognized more than 280 hospitals as Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care. Hospitals recognized for these designations were assessed using a combination of publicly available quality information and cost measures derived from BCBS companies’ medical claims.

About Blue Distinction Centers

Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable health care. Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a provider’s in-network status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for non-covered charges or other losses or damages resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.
