Stress and the risk of burning out is a serious concern for physicians around the country. Crozer-Keystone Health System is committed to teaching our residents early in their development how to manage their stress properly through our Physician Wellness Program.

The goal of the Physician Wellness Program is for residents to feel happy and healthy. Stephen T. Higgins, M.D., director of the Pediatric Residency Program at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, started the Physician Wellness Program spring of 2016 with the help of. Francis R. Zappalla, D.O., a pediatric cardiologist with training in physician wellness. Zappalla leads pediatric residents in monthly meetings and relaxation techniques, such as yoga and group discussions.

Higgins has great insight for those residents who are feeling burned out and stressed out. “The number one thing is to exercise regularly,” said Higgins. Along with staying active, he encourages residents to take time out for themselves.

“This is important because residents tend to put their life on hold when working in the medical field,” Higgins explains. Higgins also notes that if residents feel depressed or see a colleague showing signs of depression they should seek help right away.

“We here at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, believe that this program will help residents become happy and healthy for years to come,” said Zappalla.

Crozer-Keystone Health System offers numerous challenging and fully accredited residency programs at one of the leading healthcare systems in the Delaware Valley. For more information visit crozerkeystone.org/Residency.
