Lansdowne resident Dequilla Hurt, MSN, CRNP, a nurse practitioner with the Crozer-Keystone Health Network, was recently honored by the Eastern Pennsylvania Geriatrics Society (EPGS) with the Nancy Tatem, RN Memorial Award for distinguished service in geriatric nursing. Katherine Galluzzi, D.O., chief of the Division of Geriatrics at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, presented the award to Hurt at EPGS’ annual awards meeting and dinner at the Union League of Philadelphia.

Geriatrics is Hurt’s passion, and she has served this population in various roles throughout her career. Through a partnership between Crozer-Keystone Health System and Prospect Park Health and Rehab, Hurt provides primary care to the facility’s residents and works with its team on quality initiatives to reduce the incidence of resident hospitalization. She is currently focusing on antibiotic stewardship, which supports evidence-based research to promote appropriate prescribing and to prevent antibiotic drug resistance.

Each year, the EPGS presents the Nancy Tatem, RN Memorial Award to one individual from the nursing field who demonstrates special contributions to the area of geriatric nursing. “Dequilla (Dee) Hurt, CRNP, has been an advocate for quality care for older individuals in Philadelphia for over two decades,” Galluzzi says. “She is a clinical role model who truly understands the importance of looking at the whole patient and utilizing a team approach to care planning. Dee embodies the spirit of care inherent in Nancy Tatem’s life and work, and EPGS is proud to present Dee with this award in her name.”

The Eastern Pennsylvania Geriatrics Society (EPGS) is the regional affiliate of the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) dedicated to the goal of advancing high standards of clinical care and quality of life for elderly individuals. The EPGS is a multidisciplinary group of health professionals involved in the care and services for the elderly.
