Crozer-Keystone Radiology Now Offers 3D Mammography at Springfield Hospital
Crozer-Keystone now offers patients 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, at Department of Radiology at Springfield Hospital. The health system currently offers this technology at Brinton Lake Imaging, Delaware County Memorial Hospital and Media Medical Imaging. Crozer-Chester Medical Center will offer 3D mammography in the near future.
Conventional mammography takes images of the breasts from two angles. In 3D mammography, the scanner moves in an arc over the breasts, taking images from various angles to produce sharper, more detailed images.
The benefits of 3D mammography include:
- Greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities
- Possible detection of more invasive cancers that cannot be found with 2D mammography
- Reduction of call-backs
3D mammography is most recommended for women of all ages, but especially for:
- Those between the ages of 40-50
- Those who are peri- and post-menopausal
- Those who have very dense breasts
- Those who have a history of breast cancer
2D mammography will continue to be offered to patients who require it.
