DREXEL HILL, PA – BettyAnn Atkinson has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season. This morning started out like any other for the Clifton Heights mother of two until 6:45 a.m. “My water broke,” she says, “so I timed the contractions with an app on my phone. They were coming roughly two-to-three minutes apart, and I knew that was too fast.” Shortly after that she felt some pressure and realized that her baby girl was coming. At 7:25 a.m. Atkinson spoke to her OB/GYN, who coached her through the process, and at 7:45 a.m. her daughter was born.

Throughout the approximately 45-minute experience, Atkinson’s twin 14-year-old boys, Cody and Ian, were right by their mom’s side to help. “They are Boy Scouts, and are trained in first aid,” she says. “They were so good about it. They jumped right in to help; one called 9-1-1 and the other starting calling my family and friends.” The twins brought washcloths and helped to clean everyone and everything up, and just kept things under control until paramedics arrived. Once everyone was assessed they were brought to Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, where mom and baby are both doing well.

“I’m still in shock,” says the 39-year-old Atkinson, whose first day of maternity leave was just yesterday. “It’s so surreal. I keep thinking I’m going to wake up and still be pregnant.”
