Former Crozer Burn Patient Graduates from College

The Crozer Burn Team celebrated Kadeem’s graduation from Lincoln University during his visit to the Crozer Burn Treatment Center.

Upland, Pa. — Former patient Kadeem Fulmore, of Syracuse, N.Y., returned to the Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center at Crozer-Chester Medical Center today to show off his newly earned college diploma and thank the physicians and staff responsible for saving his life in 2011. Three years ago, Fulmore and his family feared he wouldn’t survive long enough to continue his college education, but this morning he graduated from Lincoln University with a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Economics.

Fulmore was involved in a 2011 automobile accident that resulted in traumatic brain injury, severe burns across 50 percent of his body and the loss of his right foot and left leg below the knee. As he spent six months in the Crozer Burn Center recovering from his injuries, Fulmore traded his dreams of finishing college for goals of simply becoming independent again.

“Today was a great day. Many of my professors and friends came especially today to see me graduate,” Fulmore said.

“The early days in his recovery were tough. He was here for so long that, like many patients, he became part of our family,” said Cynthia Reigart, R.N., nurse director of the Burn Treatment Center. “The burn team often asks about him and when we heard that he was stopping by, it couldn’t have been a nicer surprise.”

“We worked with Kadeem every day, and it is so exciting to see him doing so well,” said Wendy Dargay, recreational therapist. “A lot of his recovery came from the support of his wonderful family and his mother, Michelle, who never left his side.”

“My son is now a college graduate and can pursue his dreams. I am so grateful to the Burn Center for saving his life,” said Kadeem’s mother, Michelle Fulmore. “I couldn’t have asked for a nicer Mother’s Day gift.”
