Nationwide Asthma Screening Program Finds People at Risk and Helps those Diagnosed Take Control

Adults and child with symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath can find out if they are at risk for asthma through the annual Nationwide Asthma Screening Program. The program, sponsored by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACCAAI), has screened an estimated 115,000 people and referred more than half for further diagnosis.

Board-certified allergist, Sandra M. Gawchik, D.O. will offer a free screening program on Tuesday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the main lobby at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. The program is one of more than 200 locations across the country.

May is National Allergy and Asthma Month. Allergist across the country are helping people breathe easier by finding those at risk for asthma and helping those who are diagnosed take control through the nationwide asthma screening. In addition to helping identify people at risk for asthma, the program helps those who already know they have asthma but may be limiting their activities or missing days of school or work because of the disease.

Allergists encourage anyone who is experiencing breathing problems or uncontrolled asthma to attend a screening. The screening programs participants will:

  • Answer a short Life Quality or Kids Asthma Check survey to help determine if they have asthma or if their asthma is under control.
  • Take a special lung test that involves blowing into a tube.
  • Meet with an allergist.
