Drexel Hill, PA--Part of Crozer-Keystone Health System’s mission is to educate and inform its surrounding communities about important health and safety issues. This work was recently recognized alongside efforts by Upper Darby Township to benefit the youth of Delaware County.

Young Lungs at Play is a campaign coordinated by the Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPA) Tobacco Control Project, which the Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition and CKHS participates in. The campaign encourages local municipalities to pass regulations banning smoking in outdoor places where children play and to display messages about the Young Lungs at Play campaign in these tobacco-free areas. The team aims to increase the visibility of public health prevention and anti-smoking messages through large, appealing signs posted in tobacco-free areas.

Earlier this year, Upper Darby Township was recognized for its efforts against smoking and acknowledged for National Kick Butts Day. The ceremony was meant to highlight and commend Upper Darby Township for implementing the Young Lungs at Play project in their parks and schools. Upper Darby is the largest township in Pennsylvania to bring the Young Lungs at Play message to its parks and school playgrounds.

Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition co-chairs Ellen Williams, administrative director of Community Health Education at CKHS, and Deborah Mantegna, played a major role in collaborating to lead the county’s team in a successful fight against the environmental health hazards of smoking. Both women are co-chairs on the board of the Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition, devoting a lot of their personal time to the mission. “We are very proud of the work our Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition is doing to ensure clean air for the children of our community,” Williams says. “The coalition has done a wonderful job on this initiative with team leaders Kevin Gallagher from Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems, Thurman Brendlinger from the Clean Air Council, and Katee Yorke from PHMC leading the way.”

In collaboration with the Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition, Crozer-Keystone Community Health Education’s Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program will work to prevent youths from smoking by increasing tobacco-free school grounds, playgrounds, parks and playing fields in order to decrease youths’ exposure to these deadly products through the use of tobacco-free signage. The Borough of Darby, Concord Township, Sharon Hill Borough, Swarthmore Borough, Upper Darby School District, and Upper Darby Townships are just some of the other municipalities that are putting forth a strong effort of their own to decrease smoking in the youth of our townships.

The Tobacco-Free Coalition urges other local boroughs, school districts and townships to get involved in the fight against smoking. You can advance the cause by logging on to and signing in to request more information.
