Taylor Hospital Receives Accreditation by the ICAEL

Ridley Park, Pa.— Taylor Hospital has been granted a three-year term of accreditation in the area of Adult Transesophageal and Adult Transthoracic Echo by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL).

“This is our second consecutive three-year term of accreditation,” says Trudy Mazzone, administrative director of Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiopulmonary Services for Taylor Hospital. “Having this designation by ICAEL proves Taylor’s continued commitment to cardiac patients. We recently upgraded to state-of-the-art digital cardiac ultrasound equipment for superior image quality. We also went live with an electronic report documentation module for echo results, which provides excellent turnaround time and eliminates transcription delays through a structured transcription report template. All of these accomplishments mean one thing — that we are staying on top of the latest advancements in cardiac testing and reporting. And that is the best kind of care that we can give to our patients.”

Cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. On average, one American dies every 38 seconds of cardiovascular disease — disorders of the heart and blood vessels. The American Heart Association estimates that the direct and indirect cost for cardiovascular disease in the U.S. for 2010 was $503.2 billion.

Early detection of life-threatening heart disorders and other diseases is possible through the use of echocardiography procedures performed within hospitals, outpatient centers and physicians’ offices. While these tests are very helpful, there are many facets that contribute to an accurate diagnosis based on echocardiography testing. The skill of the echocardiography sonographer performing the examination, the type of equipment used, the background and knowledge of the interpreting physician and quality assurance measures are each critical to quality patient testing.

Taylor’s laboratory was one of the first 1,000 echocardiography laboratories in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to be recognized by ICAEL for its commitment to high-quality patient care and quality diagnostic testing.

Accreditation by the ICAEL means that Taylor has undergone a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts. The ICAEL grants accreditation only to those facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care, in compliance with national standards through a comprehensive application process including detailed case study review.

ICAEL accreditation is a “seal of approval” that patients can rely on as an indication that the facility has been carefully critiqued on all aspects of its operations considered relevant by medical experts in the field of echocardiography.

“The purpose of the ICAEL program is to ensure high-quality patient care and provide a mechanism of quality evaluation by a process of accreditation,” says Aymen Alrez, M.D., medical director of the Echocardiography Laboratory at Taylor Hospital. “Because accreditation is renewed every three years, a long-term commitment to quality and self-assessment is developed and maintained.”

ICAEL accreditation is widely respected within the medical community — which includes physicians and sonographers, as illustrated by the support of the national medical societies related to echocardiography medicine. In addition, several insurance companies require their providers of echocardiography services to be accredited.
