The Importance of Good Breast Health

Good breast health starts with routine care and self-examination. Starting as early as a teenager, breast self-exams should be an integral part of your monthly routine. It is important that you become familiar with the anatomy of your breasts so that it is easier to detect if something seems abnormal.

Yearly mammograms should begin at the age of 40 (at the age of 30 if you have a family history of breast disease). In addition to mammograms, ultrasound and MRI are used to detect abnormalities, diseases and disorders of the breast. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 98 percent.

Breast cancer is not the only disease associated with the breasts. In fact, many breast disorders are typically benign, or non-cancerous. Some examples are breast cysts, breast pain, breast lumps, inflammation and nipple discharge. Visiting your family physician or gynecologist as soon as you have pain or suspect an abnormality in the breast is the first step to early detection.

To help you maintain good breast health, Crozer-Keystone is offering “Think Pink” events, special events that pair mammography screenings with a free pink stadium blanket. This gives patients the opportunity to enjoy free light refreshments, music and fun with other women in the waiting room.
