Ask Allen Gabroy, M.D. what makes him “tick” and the overriding theme will be “giving back.”

The lifelong resident of Delaware County is chairman of the Department of Surgery at Taylor Hospital and a trauma surgeon at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. He has saved countless lives in his 35-plus-year career as a surgeon, so it is only fitting that he was tapped for a position that helps other lifesavers: police officers. As a result, Gabroy was appointed to the newly created position of police surgeon for the City of Chester.

“I have always wanted to give back to the people who are fighting for others,” Gabroy says. “I missed out on going to Vietnam, and was told I was ‘too old’ to go to Iraq, so this was a way for me to do my part.

“Policemen and women are the ones who are keeping the bad guys away from our doors,” Gabroy continues. “We need to respect them. For me, this is an honor.”

In his role as trauma surgeon, Gabroy has taken care of many police officers over the years. In his new role, which he will hold in addition to his surgical duties at Crozer-Keystone Health System, Gabroy will be responsible for creating standards and doing physical evaluations, making sure officers and their families have access to the appropriate levels of care, and designing a protocol with specific guidelines for transitioning an injured officer back to work.

Gabroy has his own thoughts about what else he can bring to the role and is eager to provide input. “Officers are under a lot of stress,” he says. “I would like to work to identify what those stressors are as well as methods to reduce them.” He also would like to do his part to help “stop the violence” among Chester’s youth. “I want to educate them,” he says. “When I was a kid, we didn’t settle our differences by picking up a weapon. It’s my goal to work with the police youth groups to educate these young men.”

Gabroy envisions the police surgeon position as a way for Chester’s finest to have access to the specialized skills and services available through the Crozer-Keystone Health System; everything from the Trauma Center to the Healthplex® Sports Club. “Police officers respond immediately to our calls,” he says. “We should do the same for them.”
