Susan Kunkel, RN, MSN
Susan Kunkel, MSN, RN, has nearly 40 years of clinical, management and consulting nursing experience in perioperative and surgical services, cardiology and critical care. She earned nursing degrees from Gwynedd Mercy College and the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, and received her master’s degree in nursing administration from Villanova University.
Kunkel’s diversified expertise includes improving patient outcomes, assuring quality performance, enhancing patient safety, and improving organizational and financial targets. An advocate for clinical professionals, she is highly skilled in providing leadership and direction in the development of professional standards and practices.
One of the newest members of the Crozer-Keystone nursing leadership team, Kunkel was named Administrative Director, Perioperative Services, for Crozer-Chester Medical Center in September 2010. In this role, she has financial and operational responsibility for Preadmission Testing, Short Procedure Unit, Operating Room, Endoscopy Suite, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and Sterile Processing Department.
Prior to joining Crozer-Keystone Health System, Kunkel served as Vice President of Perioperative Services for a 975-bed academic medical center and Level 1 Trauma Center in center city Philadelphia. In that role, she provided leadership in the Nursing organization’s successful journey to Magnet status. She also led initiatives to improve key perioperative metrics, such as improving first-case starts by over 50 percent, decreasing turnover time for ENT by 20 percent, assuring complete documentation for Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) measures to over 90 percent, decreasing specimen error rate by over 50 percent, and decreasing Pre-Admission Testing length of stay by 25 percent.
A tireless proponent of Magnet nursing excellence, Kunkel is known for creating highly collaborative and supportive environments for nurses to deliver quality, evidence-based patient care and to advance their clinical practice through continuing education, research, mentoring and professional development. At every level in the organization, Kunkel promotes the Magnet ideals of shared governance, nurse empowerment and accountability.
