Physician Assistant - Bariatric Surgery

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patients on admission to the hospital, and in the Bariatric clinic
  • Performs and documents history and physical examination based on age and history on complex and chronically-ill patients
  • Rounds on hospitalized patients in various settings including acute care to advance the plan of care, reassesses and discharge as patient condition warrants
  • Updates and records changes in health status
  • Performs independent follow-up of patients in the bariatric clinic setting
  • Formulates the appropriate differential diagnoses based on the history, physical exam, and clinical findings
  • Formulates a plan of care to address complex, acute and chronic health care needs
  • Integrates knowledge of pathophysiology that pertains to acute and chronically ill patients to assist in planning and implementation of treatment
  • Assists surgeon as surgical assist in operating room
  • Synthesizes data from a variety of sources to make clinical judgments and decisions about appropriate recommendations and treatments
  • Assesses the impact of an acute, critical and/or chronic illness or injury on the individual’s: health status (physical and mental), functional status, including activity and mobility, nutritional status, sleep and rest patterns, quality of life, family, social, and educational relationships
  • Assesses patient/family bio/psycho/social needs considering physical and age-specific needs, recognizing the dynamic nature of the patient’s condition, and provides psychosocial support to patient and family members
  • Educates patients/families about self-management of acute/chronic illness with sensitivity to the patient’s learning ability and cultural/ethnic background
  • Collaborates with health care team in ensuring that patient/family needs are met
  • Determines the need for laboratory and diagnostic studies, initiates orders, and interprets results. Initiates appropriate and timely consultation and/or referral when problem exceeds the physician assistant’s scope of practice and/or expertise
  • Employs appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and regimens with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy
  • Promotes collaboration among members of the multidisciplinary health care team to facilitate optimal care for complex, acute and chronic patients
  • Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice
  • Facilitates the use of organizational resources in caring for patients
  • Evaluates his/her clinical practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations
  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge in advanced nursing practice
  • Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and others
  • Decisions and actions on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner
  • Collaborates with the patient, significant others, and other health care providers in patient care
  • Uses research findings in practice
  • Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care

Qualification/Skills

Education

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program

Experience

  • Prefer at least 2 years of physician assistant experience in Bariatrics

Licensure/Certifications

  • Formal education as a physician assistant in an area consistent with the patient population served
  • Current Physician Assistant license for the State of Pennsylvania
  • Certification as a physician assistant by NCCPA
  • Pennsylvania prescriptive authority and DEA licensure
  • Must participate in a physician assistant supervisory agreement with bariatric surgeon specifying medically delegated functions and delegated prescriptive privileges
  • ACLS certification preferred
