Information Systems

Clinical Information Systems (IS) and Electronic Medical Records

There is a good reason why Crozer-Keystone Health System has been named one of the nation’s top 100 “Most Wired” health systems every year since 2001 by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, the journal of the American Hospital Association. In fact, for well over a decade, CKHS has been on a journey toward a fully integrated electronic medical record comprising inpatient and outpatient information, quality reporting, and a clinical knowledge base that clinicians can securely access anytime … anywhere.

On the Leading Edge

Today, only an estimated 0.01 percent of hospitals in the U.S. have yet attained a fully integrated electronic record, and none until mid-2008. At CKHS, we are well on our way to attaining this level of integration, which puts us on the leading edge of the health-care information technology movement.

What Drives Our Clinical IS Strategy?

At CKHS, two major goals drive our clinical information system strategy:

  • Expanding secure access to critical patient information
  • Introducing technology that improves clinical outcomes

In the process, we are developing a clinical IS that is not only designed to provide information about treatment and intervention, but also to improve workflow, increase our productivity and reduce costs.

Our Clinical IS Components

As a Crozer-Keystone Health Network physician, you will have access to all of the components of our Clinical IS System:

    Electronic Patient Information

    Inpatient Information

Crozer-Keystone’s inpatient information system has three major components:

    • e-Care The CKHS “e-Care” system comprises a provider order entry system (the Siemens INVISION® CPOE platform); study results; medication administration checking; and dictated hospital reports.
    •  Digital radiology records: access to all radiology images and reports in the health system through the PACS (Picture Archiving Communication System)
    • CKHS digital radiology system EKGs: access to all EKGs performed in the health system through Tracemaster, which enables the physician to view, print and fax these EKGs

    Ambulatory Patient Information

Crozer-Keystone’s ambulatory patient information system has three major components:

    • Clinical charting: We are well on our way to full implementation of the CKHS Centricity® ambulatory electronic medical records system. The system has been rolled out to all CKHN primary care physicians as well as most specialty practices.
    • e-Prescribing: allows formulary-specific electronic prescribing for ambulatory patients
    • Patient portal: patient-physician message exchange and access to partial chart records (medications, allergies, problem list)

In addition, the ambulatory information system has a secure interface with all inpatient components:

    • Radiology
    • Laboratory
    • Pathology
    • Dictated hospital reports

    Quality Reports

    EBM and Quality Reporting

Our Clinical IS includes access to the CKHS Evidence-based Medicine Resources and Annual Reports on Quality, as well as our “Indicator Reports at a Glance,” which provide updates on the following key indicators:

    • Acute Myocardial Infarcation
    • Deep Vein Thrombosis
    • Heart Failure
    • Pneumonia
    • Surgical Prevention of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia
    • Stroke

    Clinician Access

    Access Anytime … Anywhere

The CKHS DocLink Physician Dashboard gives CKHN physicians secure remote access to any CKHS technology application from their computers … at any CKHS facility, in their offices, at home, and on the road.

    Knowledge Management

    Knowledge is Power

CKHN physicians also enjoy the benefits of direct links to a wealth of clinical knowledge, including UpToDate, LexiComp, and a virtual library that includes PubMed, Ovid and EbscoHost. It also provides CKHN clinicians with direct links to many more online resources, including medical societies and healthcare accrediting bodies.
