Director of Medical Informatics

The Director of Medical Informatics (DMI) will be responsible for assisting and directing the design and implementation of clinical information systems that will support the transformation of care across CKHS.

These systems are to assist clinicians in the delivery of patient care, as well as supporting CKHS training and research missions.  The DMI serves as liaison between (1) the Administration; (2) the IT Department; and (3) the physician community.  The DMI participates as a member of the Information Services Steering Committee, representing the needs and requirements of the physician community and serves as an advocate of management in promoting the use of information technology in the clinical setting.   He or she will work in partnership with Clinical and Administrative leaders to translate clinician requirements into information system needs for clinical, teaching and research systems.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Leads and facilitates clinician advisory groups in the design of clinical systems to support excellence in patient care.
  • Engages patient care providers with varying roles including physicians, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, ancillary department personnel, and medical records professionals to contribute to the development and use of the clinical information system.
  • Is highly responsive to user’s needs, including training, to assure wide spread acceptance and provider use of the clinical systems.
  • Reviews medical informatics trends, experiences and approaches, develops technical and application implementation strategies and assists in the development of strategic plans for clinical information systems.
  • Works in concert with other Information Services staff to design and implement systems supporting patient care and research activities, while continuously evaluating new and emerging technologies to expand service delivery and reduce cost.
  • Leads design of clinical pathway models with physician, nursing and administrative leadership, and will assist in modification of these models to gain maximum efficacy and support for patient care and research protocols.
  • Leads development of clinical "rules" supporting patient care and protocol research as well as the design of clinical system features supporting protocol management and the use of the system to leverage the clinicians' time and maximize communication with affiliates and referring physicians.
  • Designs and evaluates collection of data for clinical purposes, including tracking and interpretation of outcomes.  Responsible for administering the function after development.
  • Create effective partnerships and negotiate advantageous agreements with vendor and IT management to design strategy/plan for implementation of software and features for clinician adoption, regulatory requirements and patient care needs.
  • Participates in clinical activities:
    • Provides patient care in appropriate clinical setting.
    • Has active medical practice in area of specialty.

Candidate Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • The Director of Medical Informatics will be a licensed physician with active or recent medical practice.
  • Experience as an IT physician leader with progressive leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience in medical informatics, clinical systems implementation, process re-design and change management associated with introduction of IT to clinical culture; familiarity with products and medical informatics trends and tools.
  • Track record of accomplishments in management, particularly involving successful, collaborative work with physicians.
  • Practical experience with electronic health information systems in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
  • Clinical Informatics board certification is desirable but not required.
  • Possesses good grasp of clinical work flow in both inpatient and outpatient settings; interest in clinical information systems and outcomes measurement.
  • A contemporary clinician who understands major trends in healthcare and managed care, and is familiar with point of care products and medical informatics trends and tools.
