Lifestyle and behavorial factors, such as stress, are known contributors to illness, particularly heart disease. The Young Hearts Program was started in 1999 as a heart attack prevention program meant to build on the positive success of Cardiac Rehab. Though most of the participants have had heart attacks, it is open to any person dealing with a heart condition and the many stressors of everyday life. It involves the confidential discussion of stress and lifestyle factors that may have helped to cause the person's heart attack in order to learn new ways of addressing these issues to maintain a healthy heart.

Most young heart attack patients return to a stressful work environment where it is easy to get caught up in day-to-day problem and revert back to old habits and patterns. sometimes there is additional stress on the "home front." Similar problems can occur for patients who are struggling to adjust to early retirement or other major life changes brought about by their heart attack. The purpose of the Young Hearts Program is to use the positive support of the participants to problem solve through these varous issues in a confidential forum of fellow cardiac patients.

The program is led by Keith Petrosky, PhD, a psychologist with specialized training in Behavioral Medicine. Call (610) 328-8764, if you are interested in attending a meeting.

All group meetings take place on the third Wednesday of the month in the first floor conference room at Springfield Hospital.
