Crozer-Keystone Highlights, Honors and Awards, Affiliations

Creation and Growth

Crozer-Keystone Health System (CKHS), a not-for-profit health system (501c3 status), was established in 1990 by the merger of Crozer-Chester Medical Center (Crozer) and Delaware County Memorial Hospital (DCMH). Today, CKHS comprises five hospitals, including Crozer, DCMH, Springfield, Taylor, and Community Hospitals; the Crozer-Keystone Health Network, a network of primary-care and specialty physicians who provide care at locations throughout the Delaware Valley; outpatient centers including the Crozer Medical Plaza at Brinton Lake, the Crozer Health Pavilion, and Media Medical Plaza; and the Healthplex® Sports Club in Springfield. Since its founding, CKHS has maintained financial stability and its hospitals have experienced steady growth in admissions, Emergency Department visits, and the number of beds in service. The Healthplex’s membership has quadrupled since it was established in 1996.

Notable Features

CKHS is:

  • The dominant health care provider in Delaware County.
  • The largest employer in Delaware County with more than 6,800 employees, 80 percent of whom reside in the county.
  • A supporter of evidence-based medicine (EBM), which uses universally accepted “best medical practices” to treat a variety of conditions and diseases, such as heart attack and stroke.
  • A supporter of excellence in nursing, as indicated by the recent founding of the CKHS Center for Nursing Excellence and the pursuit of Magnet™ status through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®.
  • A leader in community health, providing services and programs that meet the medical and social needs of thousands of Delaware County residents each year. A vital part of the business community, both as a provider of occupational health services and a member of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce. CKHS also has joint a venture with the MRI Centers of Delaware County and University Technology Park.
  • An advocate for important health care issues set forth by the American Hospital Association (AHA), the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), and HAP’s Delaware Valley Health Care Council (DVHC). CKHS has been a leader in advocating for medical professional liability reform–receiving the DVHC Advocacy Award in 2002–and continues to devote attention to reimbursement issues and appropriate state spending of the tobacco settlement.
