5 Fun Ideas for Family Health this Fall

5 Fun Ideas for Family Health & Fitness Day

More than 60 percent of adults and 30 percent
of children in the U.S. are overweight or obese.

From organized events at gyms and fitness centers to good old-fashioned backyard fun, the perfect activity for you and your family is just waiting for your participation.

Being overweight or obese is dangerous. It can cause health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke and may increase your risk of developing certain types of cancer. Fortunately, losing weight by improving your diet and increasing your activity level may reduce your risk for developing many of these diseases.

This autumn, take the opportunity to commit – or recommit – to establishing a healthy lifestyle for you and your family. Here are five fun activities you and your family can take part in this Fall.

1. Explore a Corn Maze and Pick Apples

Fall is the perfect season for outdoor activities with your family. Many local farms turn their cornfields into mazes in the Fall. Bring your family and get lost among the towering corn stalks. Your kids will have such a blast running around the maze that it won’t seem like exercise. Many of these same farms also include other fun and activities such as apple picking – the perfect chance to get active and stock up on healthy food.

2. Visit a National Park

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service. There are over 400 National Parks in the United States, each with its own unique offerings to explore. Two nearby favorites are Valley Forge National Park and Gettysburg National Military Park – and there are dozens of other great parks within a day’s drive where you can find the perfect fit for your family adventure.

3. Start a Family Sports Night

Kick off a family sports night on. Ask your kids to weigh in on what sport they would like to play that night and pick a sport like wiffle ball, soccer or basketball that you can do in your yard, driveway or side street (traffic permitting). Make sports night a regular weekly activity by creating a card deck of potential sports to play and have a different family member pick a card each week.

4. Turn Household Chores Into a Game

Many of the mundane chores around the house can become a fun game for the whole family. For instance, the leaves may already be falling in your yard. Build a giant pile for your kids to run and jump in or challenge the whole family to see who can find the prettiest fallen leaf on your property.

5. Run a 5K and Family Fun Run

If you’re already in good shape as a family, sign up for a local 5K race. Many races will also have a shorter, 1-mile fun run that even the younger kids can participate in. If you’re not yet ready for a 5K but have some interest, look online for “Couch to 5K” programs that will get you running in no time.
